Our Mission is to empower, uplift, protect and educate immigrants/refugee women in Minnesota so that they can achieve and thrive economically and Socially to build more resilient and healthy futures for themselves and for their children.


OUR STORY

Somali American Women Action Center (SAWAC) is the only nationally recognized refugee women led organization which is founded by former refugee women who have experienced many challenges firsthand. SAWAC focuses on stabilizing the lives of other Refugee and Immigrant women and their families in Minnesota by providing them with support around job training, Social empowerment,  skills and leadership development while we help them improve health and well-being, influence decisions in their home and community, and connect them to other professional networks that will provide a lasting support.

OUR PROGRAMS

We believe that in order to make a lasting change, women need the skills and resources to build self-confidence, understand their rights, earn an income, and gain the respect of their family and community. Our programs have been developed  based on the self identified needs of the immigrants and refugee women in Minnesota using a participatory approaches. Through our program, women learn economic, civic and social empowerment skills side by side in a way that complement each other.

SEWING 4 LIVING PROJECT

We increases women’s access to economic resources and opportunities including jobs, financial empowerment services, Wealth building skills and  Entrepreneurship. Empowering women to earn an income is the right thing to do. 

HIJAB FITNESS(Hijab Fit)

We invest in women’s social empowerment by teaching them about their health and social well-beings through our Women only fitness program(HijabFit). Women learn swimming skills how to take better care of their bodies, their health and well-being – and that of their families.

GIRLS IN GOVERNMENT

Young  Women’s participation in leadership and decision- making has proven to be good for economic and social development around the world. Our Girls in Government program introduces girls to the structure of our Government system, both at the local and National levels. 

REFUGEE WOMEN IN STEM

Refugee Women remain underrepresented
in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
workforce, with the greatest
disparities occurring in
engineering and computer
sciences.

THEME: once a war refugee and we don't want to be a climate refugee

 

The impact of the climate crisis is all too visible. Bushfires have killed more than 20 people and Millions of animals in south-eastern Australia and forced thousands more to flee their homes. Floods and storms have left hundreds dead and many more destitute in Argentina, Uruguay, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi and even here in the U.S we have experienced the climate change where many people associated global warming with summer’s melting glaciers, forest fires and disastrous flooding and more.

Since Last year, people across the world took to the streets to demand governments act on the Climate Change Crisis. Did you watch and wonder what you could do to help the global climate movement?
